Marine Patrol

The Marine Division of Baker County Sheriff's Office consists of Three seasonal full time deputies. We operate three patrol boats. Funding for the Marine Patrol is provided by the Oregon State Marine Board (80%) and Baker County (20%). The jet boats are owned and maintained by the Marine Board. Depending on the weather, our patrol season runs from the first of May through the first part of September. The Marine Patrol responds to emergencies throughout the year.

The Marine Patrol provides boaters using the waters of Baker County with many services. Our primary duties are water safety education, marine law enforcement, titling and registration services, on the water assistance to disabled boaters, and assisting with search and rescue operations when needed. The Marine Patrol is also responsible for the enforcement of regulations relating to guides and outfitters operating within Baker County.

The Marine Patrol patrols seven lakes and reservoirs with a total surface area of nearly 22,000 acres. This includes the three reservoirs on the Snake River (Hells Canyon, Oxbow, and Brownlee, with a total length of eighty six miles).

In addition to patrolling the waters in Baker County, the Marine Patrol provides water safety instruction to grade schools in the county. The focus is on the third grade, however in the smaller schools all grades may attend.

The Marine Patrol also places and maintains approximately 50 waterway markers and buoys. We mark areas where there are speed restrictions, swim areas, spillway intakes, and under water hazards.

(NOTE)

On all the reservoirs in Baker County, the water level may fluctuate on a daily basis. All boaters must be alert for underwater Hazards, as it is not possible to locate and mark all hazards.
